چکیده

Safe separation between aircraft is the primary consideration in air traffic control. To achieve the required level of assurance for this safety-critical application, the Automated Airspace Concept (AAC) proposes three levels of conflict detection and resolution. Recently, a high-level operational concept was proposed to define the cooperation between components in the AAC. However, the proposed coordination protocol has not been formally studied. We use formal verification techniques to ensure there are no potentially catastrophic design flaws remaining in the AAC design before the next stage of production. We formalize the high-level operational concept, which was previously described only in natural language, in both NuSMV and CadenceSMV, and perform model validation by checking against temporal logic specifications in LTL and CTL that we derive from the system description. We write LTL specifications describing safe system operations and use model checking for system verification. We employ specification debugging to ensure correctness of both sets of formal specifications and model abstraction to reduce model checking time and enable fast, design-time checking. We analyze two counterexamples revealing unexpected emergent behaviors in the operational concept that triggered design changes by system engineers to meet safety standards. Our experience report illuminates the application of formal methods in real safety-critical system development by detailing a complete end-to-end design-time verification process including all models and specifications.

Web Service Choreography Verification Using Z Formal Specification

Web Service Choreography Description Language (WS-CDL) describes and orchestrates the services interactions among multiple participants. WS-CDL verification is essential since the interactions would lead to mismatches. Existing works verify the messages ordering, the flow of messages, and the expected results from collaborations. In this paper, we present a Z specification of WS-CDL. Besides ve...

A model for specification, composition and verification of access control policies and its application to web services

Despite significant advances in the access control domain, requirements of new computational environments like web services still raise new challenges. Lack of appropriate method for specification of access control policies (ACPs), composition, verification and analysis of them have all made the access control in the composition of web services a complicated problem. In this paper, a new indepe...

A Requirements Capture Method and its use in an Air Traffic Control Application

This paper describes our experience in capturing, using a formal specification language, a model of the knowledge-intensive domain of oceanic air traffic control. This model is intended to form part of the requirements specification for a decision support system for air traffic controllers. We give an overview of the methods we used in analysing the scope of the domain, choosing an appropriate ...

Formal Verification of Coordination Systems' Requirements - A Case Study on the European Train Control System

Formal verification techniques of system requirements such as model-checking and theorem proving aims to show that the requirements satisfy some properties. Consequently, their success depends on the quality of the properties formulation. We propose an approach to verify requirements of coordination systems by generating automatically the properties to be verified from the requirements themselv...

An automatic test case generator for evaluating implementation of access control policies

One of the main requirements for providing software security is the enforcement of access control policies which aim to protect resources of the system against unauthorized accesses. Any error in the implementation of such policies may lead to undesirable outcomes. For testing the implementation of access control policies, it is preferred to use automated methods which are faster and more relia...
